Kechi Mayor John Speer was recently notified by the Kansas Department of Commerce the Kechi Playhouse has been approved for a $250,000 U.S. Small Communities Community Development Block Grant (CDBG). “The Playhouse has long been a Kechi landmark and is definitely worth saving,” according to Mayor Speer. “The City of Kechi is proud to have played a part in securing the grant.”
To qualify for the grant, the City was required to secure an $83,333 local match. In May 2018, the Kechi Arts Council sponsored an innovative crowdfunding campaign which successfully raised over $95,000 in six weeks. Throughout the remainder of 2018, City staff and the owner of the Kechi Playhouse, Misty Maynard worked to assemble the grant application which included drafting a business plan, assembling cost estimates and several inspections. Regarding the grant application process Mayor Speer said, “I would like to thank Kechi’s City Treasurer and Project Coordinator, Nicole Bailey, the Kechi Arts Council and all of the volunteers and donors who helped make this grant become a reality.”
The grant program is designed for privately owned businesses located in central business districts of small communities. The goal of the grant award is to revitalize aging buildings and assist small businesses in becoming sustainable. Improvements will include masonry repair, window and door replacement, soffit and fascia repair, and new roofing. Construction is anticipated to begin this Spring.
